A Remarkable Internship Experience
I am a graduate student pursuing an MSc in Media Management at the university of west indies, Mona Caribbean school of Media and Communication (CARIMAC). I served the role as a remote intern at IDB’s country office in Jamaica. My experience as a communications intern at IDB was..well, great as I was able to contribute to the gathering of impactful stories shared in IDB’s 50th anniversary Ezine. Being given the opportunity to interact with a few of IDB’s stakeholders and also the beneficiaries of the many projects and collaborative efforts that IDB is a part of and has launched prompted me to acknowledge the IDB’s many social marketing efforts in the various sectors of Jamaica and how these efforts are much more than merely providing monetary aid but offering that degree of sociality as well. The building of sustainable relationships or partnerships with private entities/prospects and providing a platform for the disenfranchised to share their experience of collaborating with IDB. Through the highlight of such generosity, this has helped and positively impacted those as mentioned earlier and brought joy in my heart as IDB’s overall efforts to promote social good increased my desire to develop an entity that offers social marketing initiatives to businesses that have a philanthropic vision that they desire to be actualized. Overall helps re-energize a business leader’s drive due to having emotionally fulfilling projects on the docket. That renewed passion can manifest itself in business leaders’ work and vision, driving innovation and eventual growth.
Main Take-Aways
Being able to maintain a level of enthusiasm and personal drive despite being depressed as I was affected by the harsh weather conditions that Jamaica was experiencing in September and October. My mentor Alison Christie Binger helped me overcome this depressive period and provided me with insights that enable me to possess the requisite outlook I needed to move forward and become a healthier individual mentally. In short, my ability to handle pressure and still meet a particular deadline has improved along with my interpersonal skills in building relationships with stakeholders. Not to mention being able to multitask effectively and efficiently. that caring and family-oriented culture that I have witnessed and experienced at IDB made it evident that it is possible to have such a culture within the workplace, that culture of being mindful of the people around. Concisely, having that level of emotional intelligence and social awareness flowing within a company, in all honesty, is an ideal culture that should be exercised in many other companies.
